AirTran (airline code FL) is a low cost airline based in Orlando, Florida. It is a subsidiary of Southwest Airlines, the budget carrier that is based in Dallas.

Ownership

AirTran began life in 1992 as ValuJet but in 1997 it acquired Airways Corporation, the parent company of Air Tran Airways. The ValuJet name was then ditched.

Route Network

AirTran's main base is at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport, the world's busiest airport, where it has more than 200 daily flights and is the second-largest carrier. It has smaller bases at Baltimore/Washington, Orlando and Milwaukee.

AirTran's route network reaches mainly across the eastern and midwest USA but stretches as far as Seattle in the north, Los Angeles in the west and Aruba in the south, one of a handful of Caribbean islands that AirTran flies to.

Other Information

AirTran is a budget airline, but it does offer a basic business class option.

It also has a frequent flier programme aimed at the business traveller, A2B, which includes benefits like free upgrades and free hold baggage allowance for economy passengers.
