XL Airways Germany began life as Star XL German Airlines. Previous owner, the XL Leisure Group, gave the airline its current name. XL Airways Germany and sister airline XL Airways France were saved by Straumur-Burdaras Investment Bank when XL Leisure Group went bankrupt in 2008.
