Virgin Australia (airline code DJ) was founded in 2000 under the name Virgin Blue, and rebranded in May 2011, coinciding with the delivery of Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A330-200 aircraft featuring new economy and business class seating.
The carrier flies throughout Australasia and also operates subsidiary brands Pacific Blue, Polynesian Blue and V Australia (launched in 2009 to offer trans-Pacific long-haul services).
Ownership
Virgin Australia floated on the Australian Stock Exchange in 2003 under its former name Virgin Blue. It is 25 per cent-owned by its founders, Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group.
In 2011 Air New Zealand took a stake of 14.99 per cent in Virgin Blue (now Virgin Australia). In 2012 Virgin Australia took a 10% stake in Australian regional airline Skywest.
Route Network
Virgin Australia operates from 24 Australian destinations and flies both domestic and international routes. It also flies to and within New Zealand. Its subsidiaries operate to and from Fiji, the Cook and Solomon Islands, Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu. Virgin Australia also flies to Bali in Indonesia and Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.
