United Airlines (airline code UA) is a major US-based airline, and founding member of the Star Alliance.

Ownership

United Airlines was formerly owned by parent company UAL Corporation, a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Since the merger with Continental Airlines the parent company is now listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the new name United Continental Holdings. UCH owns and operates United Air Lines, Inc. and Continental Airlines, Inc. both of which use the trade name United Airlines.

Passengers will continue to see the UA and CO airline codes at airports until United Continental Holdings receive the Single Operating Certificate (SOC) from the Federal Aviation Administration which is expected by the first quarter of 2012, when most flights will operate under the UA code instead of the CO code.

Route Network

United Airlines' largest hub is Chicago O'Hare. It also has hubs at Denver, Washington Dulles, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The merger with Continental meant it gained major additional hubs at New York's Newark Liberty International airport (Newark, New Jersey) and George Bush International airport (Houston, Texas) plus Cleveland Hopkins International airport (Cleveland, Ohio), allowing the newly formed airline to serve up to 370 destinations.
