TAM Airlines (airline code JJ), is a domestic and international airline based in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It takes its name, which translates as Marilia Air Transport, from its birthplace.
TAM has more than 130 aircraft and flies to more than 40 domestic and a large number of international destinations. Its average aircraft age is less than six years.
TAM became a member of the Star Alliance in May 2010.
Ownership
TAM was founded in 1976 by Captain Rolim Amaro and is in private hands. TAM has its shares listed on Bovespa (Bolsa de Valores de São Paulo) with ADRs (American Depository Receipts) listed on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange).
In August 2010 TAM announced its intention to merge with LAN, the Chile-based oneworld carrier, to create Latin America's major airline. The combined airline will have 220 aircraft and serve more than 115 destinations in 23 countries. If the merger is successful, the new company will be known as the LATAM Group, but the LAN and TAM names will remain.
Route Network
TAM claims just over an 80% share of the domestic market in Brazil. It employs 24,000 people.
The company operates flights to international destinations in the United States, Europe and South America. Codeshare agreements mean TAM offers more than 60 destinations within the US, Europe and South America.
Note that TAM uses two airports in Sao Paulo, so if you are connecting, make sure they are both arriving and departing from the same airport.
