Philippine Airlines (airline code PR) is the national carrier of the Philippines, with hubs at Manila's Ninoy Aquino airport and Cebu's Mactan-Cebu airport. The carrier has a fleet of almost 50 modern aircraft, mainly Boeing and Airbus jets, with many new aircraft on order.

Ownership

Philippine Airlines is majority owned by PAL Holdings. Founded in 1941, the airline is Asia's oldest commercial airline. It was severely affected by the 1997 Asian financial crisis when it cancelled many routes and went into receivership a year later. However, it then made a remarkable turnaround and left receivership in 2007.

In early 2012, the San Miguel conglomerate took a large minority investment in the carrier, injecting $500 million for fleet renewal.

Route Network

Philippine Airlines' network includes 31 foreign cities in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, China and Japan, plus 30 domestic routes.

Other Information

The airline is the Philippines' only carrier to have passed an IATA safety audit, however it was downgraded by the US Federal Aviation Authority in 2008, meaning that it cannot expand services to the US.

Philippine Airlines has launched EconoLight, a no-frills product, on some domestic and international routes, in order to compete with budget rivals. It has also set up a regional subsidiary, PAL Express, which uses turbo-prop aircraft to service domestic and island routes. Plans to resume flights to Europe may also be unveiled in 2009.
