Swissdiver flew Lufthansa First, on a B747-400 (Config. 1) (30/01/2012 22:37)
FRA-IKA, January 2012
Since I was connecting at FRA and had a 3+ hours layover, I made my way to the First Class Terminal. A great and commendable experience that is however equaled by the First Class lounge in the B sector that can be reached without a long walk outside (at FRA they send a car to pick transiting First passengers up only when the plane is not docked). Then shortly before the flight, I was brought to the plane by car so obviously the boarding was very smooth.
On B747-400, the First class is on the upper deck (something that will change with the new B747-8). Once there, a good and a bad surprise. The bad one? Old First class seats, tiny screen that are not even seen in business class any more. And to my surprise, the crew told me it will take some more time to update them all (contrarily to what the website suggests). The good news? I was the only pax!
That said, LH accepts now only 8 First class passengers on board, allocating them 2 seats each, one to sit, one to sleep.
So service was obviously superb having one stewardess just for me! Wine selection was pretty good, and the food superb (LH is one of the remaining airlines still serving caviar in First class). I could then have a comfortable nap (the screen being far too small and old to watch a movie) before landing.
To summarise, the old seats and screens should be avoided as much as possible. But the service, the food and the wines were really First class!

FrequentGolfer flew Lufthansa Economy (short haul), on a CRJ900 (29/12/2011 15:02)
Return after the previous review....
Dusseldorf to Manchester. Deserted airport, check-in easy since someone helped us use the kiosk, and a choice of two desks with no queue to drop bags. Flight on time, row 11C again, food was a rather sticky piece of cake – difficult to eat with no plates – we’ve had to dry clean our clothes as a result. May consider claiming if a qualified solicitor wants to get in touch. Bussed to and from the plane. Arrived on time

FrequentGolfer flew Lufthansa Economy (short haul), on a CRJ900 (29/12/2011 14:58)
Manchester to Dusseldorf operated by Eurowings. Terminal 1 is a spacious, airy place, but Lufthansa were pushed into (or were only prepared to pay for) a tiny corridor. Our check-in desks were 60-64 of which only two were manned, and one of those were for business class. The self check in kiosks didn't seem to work. Around 200 people / passengers were milling about for various Lufthansa destinations in zig zag aisles.
Eventually a LH employee started to pull out of the queue anyone who was on a later flight to try and alleviate the problem but still we queued for nearly an hour to check-in, despite the queue having been considerably shortened.
Boarding was across the tarmac and up onto the aircraft. We were in row 11. We have yet to find a way to choose our seat. Leg room was satisfactory, side space limited. All the overhead space had been taken up by commuter luggage. The flight was just over an hour. We had a cheese favoured roll, free alcohol. Staff were fine. Arrived on time at Dusseldorf and we went back down the steps and were bussed to the terminal.

Hobbster flew Lufthansa Economy (29/10/2011 13:25)
We flew Lufthansa April 26th-May10th 2007 from Newark, NJ to Frankfurt, DE and I had to write a review due to some less than stellar reviews of Lufthansa on here.
While the seats in economy were exactly what we expected from economy, not perfect for sitting and less for sleeping, the service and food were far beyond anything we expected.
The flight crew was friendly and helpful, even with some suggestions for where we were going in Germany, what beers for my wife to try (which were spot on because she loved them).
I loved the flight and it was one of the highlights on our trip to Germany.

akingunday flew Lufthansa Economy, on a A380-800 (09/10/2011 09:11)
I never seen such a worst service and arrogant service staff in my life.
I paid extra for this A380 flight, FRA-JFK, Oh my God the plane was African immigration carrier (I have no problem with Africans or immigrants, I am self immigrant) full crying children, it is also OK. I have kindly asked to change my seat. I asked I want to sleep just for 1 hour, please , whole flight crying children, and she said NO, you have to stay your seat. OK, but plane has many quite seats. I need to rest. German Gest... Hostess said NO.
When I asked why, she said; no need to answer, and do I need to call in flight security?
I said just wanna sleep for an hour. for this discussion she was very angry. who is the customer and who is the host.
Shortly: UNHAPPY FLIGHT, unhappy A380 experience.

I Have just flown the newly configured B747 with the new seat and fixed bed option.
This comes with all new furnishings including a far superior IFE product with a 17 in screen as part of their suite product as defined by every seat now having a half size bulkhead around the area.
They have somply set aside for eaqch passenger teh area formerly devoted to two seat.
The fixed bed against the window is very comforable and versatile as a large desk space should you want to sit in your own seat. Hard to beat, better than all others

Flew the upgraded B747 where they only assign two seats per passenger.
The extra seat can be used for sperading out items to be used in flight and then made up into a dedicated bed for sleeping by the FA. The idea works great. Most opted for the bed being made up after takeoff and simply swapped the inflight working stuff, books, papers, laptop etc. over to their seat when using the bed.
The feeling of spaciousness and privacy was much enhanced, especially for those not in the exit row.
The service and on ground were typical of most reviewers. Boarding is still a cattle queue even for first class.

I am a regular lufthansa economy traveler. The problem with the LH 747 fleet is that they have the worst inflight entertainment in economy. They have old CRT monitors which have lost color. If you sit in the emergency exit (32), then you have the privilege of watching a 10 inch LCD from 10 feet away. So, if you depend on inflight entertainment to survive the long flights, then avoid a 747 on Lufthansa. Their A330s are equipped with more acceptable inflight entertainment.

FrustratedRegistration flew Lufthansa Business, on a A380-800 (26/04/2011 11:31)
I arrived on a connecting flight from LHR (which I won't review). Transfer from the arrival gate to the departure gate was like a slow motion marathon but I got there in the end.
For the A380 LH / FRA have built a new wing on the airport which separates economy from premium passengers at an early stage so the entire upper level of the building is supposed to be business/first. Well, if you blindfolded someone and took them there they would probably guess they were in standard airport cafe. I arrived 90 mins prior to departure and got the last easy chair. After that it was hard metal chairs for all other "premium" passengers. Very thin on the drinks and food.
Boarding was very swift. Many people have criticised the seat for being not fully flat but having flown on BA Club World many times I would say that what the LH seat lacks in not being fully flat it makes up for in having so much more space around it. BA's flat bed is good for sleeping unless you want to bend your knees or elbow in which case you bang your joints on the "coffin" wall.
The aircraft itself is very quiet. I was almost in the back row but still found it peaceful.
The crew were very cordial but surprisingly slow; they seem not to be allowed to get out of their seats until the aircraft has levelled out at cruising altitude.
The food was very good but the wine was poor and the drinks were terrible using some brands I'd never heard of and others I only knew because I had said "wow, that's cheap" in a duty free shop!
Disembarkation was swift and my bag was waiting for me when I got to the belt.
Having heavily criticised the new lounge above I should say the SAA Baobab lounge in JNB was very nice and the newly re-furbished LH lounge at terminal 1B was also very shiny and peaceful. I used the arrival lounge in FRA on the way back which was also very good; you will see it said that you cannot use the arrival lounge if you are not ending your journey in FRA but if you have a friendly passport and time to kill there is nothing to stop you using it.

I have to admit that LH knows so well about customer service in general
Inflight .counters..boarding. phone...
The best of 340-600 is the configuration in Economy 2-4-2 for economy seats they are very confortable and for 9 hrs flight was good...
I had sleep
Personal video is great..selections is amazing... and the service on board...always is a group of the crew walking around... offering something to drink or looking that everything works great...
No US airline have that... LH is not a no frills airline.. drink alcohol or non-alcoholic beverages as much as you want....
The food is great and better portions than other airlines...and the smile and service from the crew is just awsome...
Thanks LH ..keep doing it..
For economy seats LH have one of the best...

Narita to Frankfurt - wish I'd paid the extra money to fly business class! Crammed in the lower deck with 419 other people, it was plain uncomfortable for the whole eleven and a half hours.
The whole airplane seemed to be designed for Asians. Narrow seat, small seat pitch, the seat back of the passenger in front of your face most of the time, except at meal times when the attendant ordered him to sit up.
Boarding was reasonably quick but de-planing was a long drawn-out process, not helped by a number of first-time passengers, and an absence of instructions from staff.
Service and meals were good, but not much space for it, juggling items between the table and the seat pocket.
Flew back from Munich on a 340-600 much better. Never again in a 380!

Love this plane! I've flown this route twice and will continue to use it! The 2-4-2 configuration is so nice. No one has that awkward "climb over two people" situation.
I especially like that the bathrooms are in the downstairs compartment. It's so much easier than queuing up in the back of the plane and getting in the way of the flight attendants. It's also a great area to get a drink and stretch your legs.
The personal entertainment screens are great and offer a wide variety of films, TV shows, documentaries and music.

What a disappointment!. 1st and 2nd flight on an A380 FRA to JNB and JNB to FRA and low and behold Lufthansa has not installed "flat beds" in business class. It is a case of "slip sliding" down the seat. Headrest keeps slipping down as well and whoever thought up the wonderful idea of inserting the personal reading lamp in the winglet of the headrest. Lufthansa is a premium airline and to invest in the A380 the way it has done and not include state of the art seating is questionable business sense, especially when it is understood that the seating will be upgraded in the next couple of years. I understand Singapore has done it in a sensible way.

Lufthansa B747-430 D-ABVD Bochum (first flight 18 April 1990) LH778 SIN-CGK Economy Class Seat 33K DPR 1810 ARR 1850
Background I was scheduled to fly Jetstar on this route but there was a sudden flight change from Jetstar. The flight before my flight itself was already delayed by 8 hours and the same flight number with the one I was supposed to take was delayed until the next day the day before. No explanation was given from Jetstar other than weather condition - which was weird as ALL other airlines were flying normally on schedule that day. Fearing of not arriving home in time for weekend, I opted to seek alternatives to other airlines. LH offered the cheapest one-way last minute ticket.
Booking I purchased the ticket at sales counter at the check-in area Terminal 2. The agent asked for my *alliance FFP and I gave her my Mileage Plus. Strangely, after more than 4 weeks, no miles were credited to my Mileage Plus.
Check-in Check-in was done quickly at check-in counter. It was breezy and not so many people were checking-in. The agent gave me a window seat 33K from my FFP profile.
Security and Immigration Singapore has the most hospitable security and immigration officers. All was done in timely and prompt manner. 5-star experience!
Gate area My flight was scheduled to depart from gate E04 and the boarding time is printed at 1730 for 1810 departure. I spent my time to use internet kiosk nearby the gate, but this kiosks were very inconvenient die to the close proximity to smoking lounge (the smoke still sipped out). I had written to Changi airport customer feedback and they promised to look into this matter. Before 1700 the gate was opened and another securuty check was performed. This time with thorough body search but this was done very promptly. Lufthansa always have fresh set of crew on this flight and they were in waiting area already waiting for passengers from FRA to disembark.
Boarding At 1730, the agent (SATS) informed passengers to collect immigration and customs cards for Jakarta at information desk. Shortly after, boarding call was announced: first, business, and *alliance Gold were invited to embark first followed by travellers with children. One flight attendant stood by door 2L and welcoming the passengers. I quickly passed business class section to my seat by the overwing exit 3R. Row 33 is the second row of economy behind business class row. The row ahead of it; row 32 only has H and J seat so my seat 33K enjoy more legroom. Also, compared to 32H and 32J, 33K has more privacy as you don't directly seat face-to-face with flight attendant who sits in the jumpseat. However, it was closed to lavatories but for short haul flight, this shouldn't be a problem.
The Seat LH 747 still has old generation economy seat. No PTV, only limited music channel. Overhead monitors were off for short haul flight. The seat has Model B seat belt (same as Southwest - a handy info for those who needs to bring extender). A small feather pillow was placed on each seat. The cabin has dimmed yellow lighting but despite its 20years old, it still cleans and in immaculate condition.
Taking off Shortly before 1810, the plane began its pushback. Safety video was shown in the overhead monitors and after that, the monitors were off for the duration of the flight. Plane made way to the taxiway and took off from runway 20C.
In-flight service Headphones were distributed (and came with ear covers which were nice touch). Meal service followed soon. Meal in economy was in paper box which consist of a tiny cold sandwich, a cake, kitkat bar, and a 200ml bottled water. No coffee/tea service followed. If there is any gripe for LH, it's purely the reduced inflight offerings. I recalled last year, they still served more decent meal followed by tea/coffee service. The crew themselves were indifferent. They handed out the meal just like people handed meal tray to prisoners; no smile or a 'enjoy your (tiny) meal'. After collecting back the empty boxes, the crew was nowhere to be seen and hiding in the galley until landing time. Luckily, they still responded to crew call button. I enquired about inflight shopping but they couldn't offer one on short haul flight.
Landing We were landing earlier and arrived at the gate before 1850 scheduled arrival time. Immigration has pretty short line but waiting for baggage was still painful at CGK. I had to wat for more than 30mins alone at the conveyor belt waiting for my baggage.
Verdict The flight itself went uneventful, but on other aspects, LH really lacks compared to others. If they are intended to use 747 for extended period, at least upgrade the economy class. Also, the crew definitely need a hospitality course, they are far from those Asian carriers' crew and not even close to sister airlines: Austrian and SWISS.

On time departure, wonderful cabin and ground crews in all of the airports and planes in my itenerary (MCI-ORD-DUS-ATH and ATH-FRA-PHL-MCI). I flew a A330-300 there and a A340-300 back; the experience was exactly the same, but the 330 was newer. I had the pleasure to fly with the new Airbus from Beijing to Frankfurt; it was a nice flight, very quiet, as the plane is far more silent than the 747, but I was totally disappointed by the Lufthansa business class on that plane, as, apart from the 2-2-2 configuration, there was no difference with the business class on older planes: same, non fully reclining seat, relatively small screen, short distance between rows (if you are not in the middle row, you have to step over your neighbour or be stepped over), same food without fantasy, but a good and efficient service.

FRA - DUB. This was an onward connection from my flight from Orlando (see earlier review). Our baggage had been checked through to Dublin so we had one less worry. Even though this was a connecting flight, we still had to go through security, which was a little slow and more than a little unfriendly.
Frankfurt is a nice airport with a good range of shops airside. We were very impressed with the duty free shop which had a particularly good range of gift sweets and chocolate at very good prices. Most of all were amazed to find Disney music boxed filled with chocolates: very nice gifts and something that wasn't available at the Disney parks in Orlando! Needless to say we bought some of these.
There are two Lufthansa lounges in this part of Frankfurt airport, one adjacent to Gate 44 was ideal as our Dublin flight departed from Gate 45. The lounge is at the top of a long flight of stairs, but having hand baggage only this wasn't too much trouble.
This lounge has a good range of international magazines and newspapers, a business area and showers. Having been unable to sample the arrivals lounge, I was particularly glad to have the opportunity of a refreshing shower.
There is a good range of savoury and sweet snacks, soft and alcoholic beverages, and most importantly excellent coffee. There was a nice soup available with fresh crusty bread which made a light lunch. Seating is plentiful even when busy. However, flights are not called so keeping an eye on the departure screens is a must.
We went to the gate at 4.00pm for our 4.20 flight. Boarding had comenced and we were seated within a very short time. The business cabin of the Airbus A320 (200) is configured 3-3 as in economy but the middle seat is blanked out with a tray to store drinks, etc. The cabin was immaculate and staff very welcoming.
Pushback was on time and we were airborne after a short taxi. The flight and cabin crews introduced themselves and the safety announcement was given in both German and English.
Catering consisted of a quality salad and smoked fish with warm bread rolls. Soft and alcoholic drinks were offered and regularly replenished along with more excellent coffee.
Landing in Dublin was on time at 5.20pm, and we quickly were deplaned and had a short to the baggage area. Having checked a total of six bags we were delighted to find that they all were quickly on the belt. In this case, priority handling was excellent.
We were quite impressed with this short (2 hour) flight. Lufthansa offer a good product on short haul business.

MCO-FRA. Check-in for the 2140hrs flight opened just after 1730hrs. By this time a queue had begun to form for economy check-in. Being a three class flight, there was a seperate check in area for each class. Being Star Alliance Gold card holders, my wife and I were able to use the First class desk and also benefited from enhanced luggage allowances. We each had three bags, all of which were free. Only one party was in front of us at check in and we were swiftly dealt with by extremely pleasant man. We had an onward flight from Frankfurt, our luggage was checked through and boarding cards issued for this flight too.
Security at Orlando International is quite slow, they are currently at Orange level so it is worth allowing extra time for this.
Lufthansa use Delta's Lounge in Orlando. This is a very large opulent lounge with attended bar service. There is a limited range of reading material and food. The staff began to remove the food (cookies and crackers) at 8pm. At this point the lounge was nowhere near closing time, we felt this to be somewhat unfair to passengers using the lounge. To their credit, however staff gave ample notice of the bar closing making sure that nobody would do without a final glass of wine.
We boarded around 9.00pm, it was a short walk from the lounge to the gate. There was a seperate entrance for First and Business pax, and boarding was very swift indeed. We were warmly greeted at the aircraft door and shown to our seats. My jacket was taken and hung in the wardrobe.
The Airbus A340 is configured 2-2-2 in business. The seats are faced in a combination of blue and gray cloth and lok very welcoming. The entire cabin is very attractive. First class is in the front and seperated from business by a curtain. Our seatd were 7 H& 7K and were very close to the galley and toilets. I must commend Lufthansa for placing supplies of moisturiser and mouthwash in their toilet cubicles: a small touch but but very nice indeed.
The seats are virtualy lie flat and can be reclined in a myriad of ways. There is a gentle massage function included in the seat. I had no difficulty getting comfortable during the flight, however, sleeping was not so easy. Despite the lie flat function, neither my wife nor I could get really comfortable for sleeping.
Pre flight drinks (sparkling wine, water or juice) were offered about 9.20pm. We pushed back at 9.30 and were airborne just after 940pm. The A340 is a four engined aircraft and despite the huge surge of power, the cabin was very quiet during takeoff, and remained so for the entire flight. The Captain introduced his crew, as did the senior flight attendant and proceded to give a very good safety demonstration in both German and English.
Shortly after reaching cruising level, dinner service began. The service throughout the flight was exemplary: attentive and friendly without being intrusive.
There was a choice of three starters and entrees. My wife had prawns with avocado & horseradish cocktail sauce, I chose beef carpacio with baby argula and watercress. Both were nicely presented and served on elegant crockery.
For mains, my wife chose pan seared salmon with horseradish mashed potato, I opted for roasted tenderloin of pork. Both were delicious.
Dessert of cinnamon marinated pluns with crumble was equally good.
The champagne on offer was Jacquart Brut Mosaique and was wonderful.
During the night, the crew made several trips through the cabin with drinks. A selection of soft drinks was also available at the galley along with chocolates.
About an hour before landing, we were served breakfast: an omelette withy mushroom ragout, tomato concassee, potato rosti and bacon. As with dinner, there was a wide selection of breads on offer. Coffee was hot and strong, just the ticket after a long overnight flight.
Due to congestion at Frankfurt, we had to take a holding pattern for about 10 minutes, but we landed punctually at 11.15am. Touchdown was very smooth indeed. We were bussed to the terminal building on very crowded buses. This was the sole downside to the flight. Due to the welcome lounge closing at 1230pm, there wasn't really time to visit there by the time we reached the terminal building.
Overall we were very impressed with the service on this flight. The cabin crew were possibily the most friendly and efficient we have ever encountered. It is just a pity that we couldn't get comfortable to get a good sleep.

Boarding was swift and efficient. My coat taken from me very quickly.
Only German newspapers were available and OJ, water and champagne offered.
An on time departure was followed by two drinks services with nuts and then lunch.
I was in 24G which would have been a good seat if it was not for the baby beside me.
The only other downside was that it was always the last seat to be served and by the time it got to me there was no choice.
A starter of sesame tuna with noodles (I later noticed everyone else also had a salad by mine was missing), beef in soy and ginger and with noodles and a choice of cheese and desserts.
Halfway through the flight was a choice of cake, fruit and sandwich and then just before landing an evening meal.
No menu was given out and I was presented with a roll, beef stroganoff and a dessert.
The advanatge of the back cabin is that it is quieter as there is no standing around space although the crew do walk through a lot as the galley just in front is the main galley. There is also one toliet here but far enough away as not to be a nuisance. Whilst it did not effect me a couple of people were having problems with the laptop power which they were complaining cut out after about ten minutes. I overheard one of the crew saying it was a regular problem so bring a spare battery!!
It's amazing for a leading airline like Lufthansa that they do not have a proper flat bed. This one is lie flat but sloping! IFE was easy to use and had a good, if not that wide, choice of films etc.

I haven't flown with Lufthansa economy class on long haul sectors due to the cramp seat, minor seat recline and no personal TV facility (for 747 aircrafts). Perhaps I may try their new airbus A380 and feel the difference...

I flew between Frankfurt and Los Angeles with Lufthansa A340-600, the duration was about 11 h 30 min, so the entertainment onboard was great, I could not sleep so I watched 4 movies and some tv series. The service was great, but the seats were not that great.

Much has been said about the poor sleeping comfort of the Lufthansa Business Class seat. I approached this FRA - JNB sector with an open mind and initially 2K was an attractive location.
Boarding had been very congested but once on board the crew were efficient taking jackets serving drinks and making us welcome and the cabin was clean and in excellent condition. On time departure and no delay in the bar and meal service which had a wide choice and was favourable compared other long haul food and wine. So far so good.
The main event on a night flight for most of us is the sleep and although I tried around 10 different recline configurations the sleeping possibilities were very limited. Across around 30 long haul carriers, this is the worst business class seat for sleeping I have recently experienced.
Flight arrived on time, disembarcation was efficient and luggage delivery superb.
Pity about the seat.

I have a hard time sleeping in a lie-flight on in incline and, for the money, market forces should dictate a "real" sleeper in business for the NYC to Frankfurt route. Lufthansa, however, needs to segment to market for the 4 First Class seats in front, so business gets the incline. The seat was otherwise comfortable, movie selection was OK, the amenity kit rather meagre. The meal was fine and service was excellent. The Lufthansa website has long been ground-breaking and transfer at Munich is among the most efficient of any major airport.

I have flown Lufthansa and their A340-300's a couple of times and I've been pretty satisfied. These two times I have flown it so far I have gone from Dusseldorf to New York and have really enjoyed it. Once we got fogged in and were forced to spend the night in Dusseldorf ( I connect from Sweden ). We got a really luxury hotel and free meals at the hotel. Lufthansa paid for all this and it gave us a day to see Dusseldorf. The flight's there great and if you can find a cheap flight with them I would recommend it!

BHX-FRA-MRS-FRA-BHX
Check-in: All done online, very easy with good seat selection function. Printed my boarding passes in the UK - barcode scanned properly, no problems. Took advantage of the mobile boarding passes from the french end as no printer available. Again, barcode scanned very easily.
Boarding: For a 'full-service' airline I was disappointed that there was no call for business class passengers to board first. However, I can understand them not doing this at Frankfurt as the aircraft were boarded by bus.
Seat: Comfy grey leather seats with yellow piping. As with most european short-haul business class nowadays, the middle seat was kept free and was occupied by a very handy tray table. Not a lot of recline, so not great for sleeping, but ideal with a pillow for a bit of a snooze.
Service: Exceptional, efficient german service most of the time, with the exception of the FRA-BHX leg, although it was late at might and the crew had probably been on their feet for most of the afternoon already.
Food & drink: 4-course meal on each flight, consisting of 'tapas-size' portions which were just right for the length of flight, well presented and extremely delicious. Good quality wines (both red and white) served at the correct temperature. Good german beer (Warsteiner) served in large bottles. Always asked if I wanted water along with my alcoholic beverage. Tea and coffee served after dinner.
General: Connections at Frankfurt were well timed with no feeling that you needed to rush (always a worry in hubs of that size!). Flights were generally on time, although some minor delays were experienced due to crew being late (from another flight) and sheer traffic volume at Frankfurt. Any delays were met with apologetic announcements from the cabin crew and flight deck, but most delays were made up in the air.
Overall: A good quality short-haul business product, through an efficiently run Eurohub. Well worth considering if you wish to fly from a regional UK airport rather than having to travel hours to get to London!

What a great service. The value on Lufthansa is good. The seat is spacious, even though it is angled lie flat. Check in was busy and took some time because the people in front were getting their visas checked. The boarding was prompt and service was superb, very attentive and my additional requests for food and drinks were well received. The seat 5K was well placed in the front of the aircraft (behind first class) was far enough forward from the washrooms and very quiet. The quality of food was fine, although the movies were not the best selection. However, this is the first time that an IFE system has had excellent audio.

The flight between Munich and Hannover was operated by an RJ85, which seemed very old. Getting inside, the interior was worn and appeared noisy. Sitting in 2A, was cramped, I would have prefered 1A and would recommend doing whatever it takes to get that seat! Tray tables were in the armrest because the first row of seats is a pair off centre. Meal was poor, slightly better than economy with an average bar selection.

LondonCity flew Lufthansa Economy (short haul), on a CRJ700 (09/09/2009 13:45)
Dusseldorf to Bucharest (August 2009)
Note: This flight was taken on a 48-seater Canadair CR2 which is a shortened version of the CR7 displayed here.
Knowing that the CR2 is a rear-engined plane and that this Monday morning flight was likely to be full I took the precaution of checking-in online the evening before. I managed to grab seat 6F which is away from the engines and towards the front. I was just ahead of the wings.
As this was an early flight at 0910, I had overnighted at the Sheraton hotel which is located atop the airport car park. After a restful night’s sleep I had only to walk the 200 or so yards between the hotel’s lobby and the airport terminal.
I had chosen to depart Dusseldorf, rather than Amsterdam or Frankfurt, because I wanted to avoid the sort of “big airport” delays that can happen during the summer months. In that respect Dusseldorf did not disappoint. The airport was a pleasure to use and Lufthansa (the main user of this airport) still old-fashioned enough to provide racks of free newspapers (both German and international titles) within its terminal area.
But there was a potential problem. Even though it was August, the airport was shrouded in mist that morning. Fortunately departures were unaffected (only incoming services were delayed) and, for my CR2, this was its first flight of the day.
Bus boarding commenced at 0840. After a short delay passengers were seated just before 0900. The CR2 has limited space within its cabin (it’s basically an elongated executive jet) so those in the know deposited their hand luggage (for loading into the hold) with airline staff just before boarding.
The flight (operated by Lufthansa’s regional partner Eurwings) taxied away on time but were held at the end of the runway for a five or 10 mins because of the weather conditions before being allowed to take off.
The CR2 is an exhilarating aircraft in which to fly with engine noise (at least in row 6) subdued. The flight was almost full in economy but there seemed only a couple of occupants in the first few rows of business class.
Nothing happened service-wise until almost an hour into the flight. Then staff emerged from the galley to hand passengers a light meal on a tray: slices of ham or cheese plus a small dessert. There were two rounds of drinks.
We routed overhead Southern Germany, Austria and Hungary before beginning the descent to the Romanian capital.
Touchdown was more or less on time at 1245 (Bucharest is one hour ahead of Dusseldorf time). The CR2 parked on the apron in front of the terminal.
A bus took us to the arrivals area. After a few mins wait at immigration I was in the baggage hall with my case waiting on the belt.

LondonCity flew Lufthansa Economy (short haul), on a ATR42-500 (08/09/2009 14:51)
London City to Dusseldorf (August 2009)
London City (LCY) was eerily quiet for this 1800 Sunday evening flight operated by an ATR42-500 turbo-prop.
Although the flight is billed as a Lufthansa service (and bore the carrier's regional livery) it is actually operated by under licence by German airline Contactair.
I had checked in online earlier in the day and allocated myself window seat 5F which was towards the front of the economy class zone. There were no check-in delays.
Boarding commenced soon after 1730 with newspapers (both English and German titles) being offered at the door.
We taxied away on time. The twin-engined ATR42 is a noisy plane on take off and climb but the racket abated once we reached cruising height. Seating is four across (2-2) and space seemed adequate given that the ATR42 is a commuter plane.
The two cabin crew served passengers with the sole occupant in business class getting his meal and drinks first. Service was reserved yet efficient.
Catering consisted of freshly made ham or cheese rolls with a chocolate bar and drinks.
It was perfect flying weather and after a trip of little more than an hour we landed in Dusseldorf some 20 mins early at around 2015.
Passengers had a bus transfer to the terminal and my bag appeared soon after on the carousel.

Sat in 21C from MUC-LHR which was as good a seat as most on the plane except the exit rows. On my flight the business curtain was further back than the plan shown. There was a drinks service with a roll and a chocolate bar - very business like service. Leather newish seats were quite comfortable as a fell asleep! Boarding was good with self service gates where you scanned your bardcode.

Old style seating. Low privacy since seats are upper deck (narrower cabin) 2+2. Overhead lockers are too small for normal carry-on. Very small personal monitors. Cabin service is odd since customers are served according to their Lufthansa FF status not by rows. The whole product is dated. Not worth paying double the price of very good LH business class.

I flew Johannesburg Frankfurt on LH 747 on 4/10, seat 27A. The seats are very average for business class nowadays. I fail to see why they rate so highly, they are not even a fully flat seat. I returned to SA on a SAA 340 300, much better seating, and fully flat bed seat, in a different clas to LH.

A severely outdated seat perhaps, but an overall great product. Crew, once they lose the somewhat stern initial touch, are very friendly and efficient. The open cabin design on the upper deck facilitates the constant filling of my glass and if my glass never dries out I am a very happy traveller. The food offering surpasses any other airline I have taken. High quality varied ingredients, and a decent quantity.
It's this combination of great food and drink that makes the old-fashioned seating much more palatable and one can sleep very easily. And I have to admit that LH First is the only time I have travelled on the upper deck since I was about 6 years old when the First Class lounges disappeared from the 747's... It doesn't feel quite like the nose of a 747, but it is fun!
The ground service, with true VIP priority, makes the product for me.

Even though there were a lot of critics, I like the seat and its comfort.
On first use, you should read the several pages manual for all the seats functions.
I prefer 1A, 1K and 9K. Even more leg room than normal. 9A not recommended as the Door 1L is often used for boarding and you have no quiet moment until the door is closed.
Service is good, efficient and food and beverages meet expectations.
