CosmicB flew Lufthansa First, on a B747-400 (Config. 1) (18/04/2012 09:14)
Quick and efficient check-in followed by a la carte dining in the SAA First-class lounge.
As we were only 4 passengers on the upper deck the two flight attendants pampered
us throughout the flight. Great food and drinks served with professionalism and style.
As each passenger has two seats, everyone is asked if he/she would like to have the bed
made on the window or aisle side. Once decided the flight attendant rolls out an extra mattress
and prepares the nice down duvet and pillow.
A fashionable pyjama made by van Laack and slippers were distributed, the amenity bag was
made of cheap plastic but the contents were of good quality.
The AVOD system offered a good choice of movies and TV shows but the monitor was not up to standard as it was too small and outdated.
8 hours of sound sleep were followed by an excellent breakfast and although arriving very early in the morning in Europe we felt well rested and refreshed.

The A-380 is truly amazing and Lufthansa does First Class right on this airplane. From the moment I arrived at the First Class terminal in FRA until I reached JNB the next day, I was treated with the utmost courtesy.
I took the advice of another website and booked seat 1A. Rather than clutter the cabin with overhead bins each seat has its own closet and the closet for 1A & 1K are located just forward of the seat. This made it very convenient to get to anything I needed during the flight.
I’ve been able to fly first on several different international carriers and these seats are by far the best. They are nice and wide with infinite adjustability. Even the ottoman is adjustable fore and aft to accommodate for the height challenged.
LH knows how to treat the Premium passenger and this all comes through as the service on board as well as on the ground was impeccable.

While the service was great I was disappointed in the seat itself. The screens a tiny and mine didn't work properly. The only movies I had access to where the ones that kept running all night.
In the "beb" position the seat was lumpy and very uncomfortable so no sleep for me.
I've heard LH is going through a cabin refit so I can only hope this plane will be on the list.

FRA-IKA, January 2012
Since I was connecting at FRA and had a 3+ hours layover, I made my way to the First Class Terminal. A great and commendable experience that is however equaled by the First Class lounge in the B sector that can be reached without a long walk outside (at FRA they send a car to pick transiting First passengers up only when the plane is not docked). Then shortly before the flight, I was brought to the plane by car so obviously the boarding was very smooth.
On B747-400, the First class is on the upper deck (something that will change with the new B747-8). Once there, a good and a bad surprise. The bad one? Old First class seats, tiny screen that are not even seen in business class any more. And to my surprise, the crew told me it will take some more time to update them all (contrarily to what the website suggests). The good news? I was the only pax!
That said, LH accepts now only 8 First class passengers on board, allocating them 2 seats each, one to sit, one to sleep.
So service was obviously superb having one stewardess just for me! Wine selection was pretty good, and the food superb (LH is one of the remaining airlines still serving caviar in First class). I could then have a comfortable nap (the screen being far too small and old to watch a movie) before landing.
To summarise, the old seats and screens should be avoided as much as possible. But the service, the food and the wines were really First class!

Flew the upgraded B747 where they only assign two seats per passenger.
The extra seat can be used for sperading out items to be used in flight and then made up into a dedicated bed for sleeping by the FA. The idea works great. Most opted for the bed being made up after takeoff and simply swapped the inflight working stuff, books, papers, laptop etc. over to their seat when using the bed.
The feeling of spaciousness and privacy was much enhanced, especially for those not in the exit row.
The service and on ground were typical of most reviewers. Boarding is still a cattle queue even for first class.

FRA to GRU Fun to ride in Mercedes Van from First Class lounge (brilliant) to aircraft with other passengers. Otherwise increadibly long walk between terminals (which i don't recommend). Upper Deck seat 83K exit row. Same aircraft and service from JFK review. Quiet and comfortable with excellent service though be sure to shop Duty Free early since special items go quickly! Arrived on time though long lines for immigration at GRU, priority lane is only for seniors and parents with children. Baggage waiting once cleared immigration.

JFK/FRA Upper Deck First Class Great lounge at JFK with First Class dining room. Got to watch two new Ferraris being off-loaded from aircraft! Seat 83A, love Upper Deck seating. Cabin crew attentive and professional. Even though these seats have been around for quite a while they are rather intircate with all kinds of storage compartments and even a flower holder (red rose). Exit row seat meant no need to step over neighbor. Had chance to talk to cabin crew as he sat across from me. Plenty of gossip about A380 service to Tokyo. Food was superb and hot! Entertianment was okay, though system a little dated. Nice blanket and pillows, somewhat comfortable to sleep.

Sao Paulo - Frankfurt and Frankfurt - Mumbai, love the upstairs First, great service, great food, typcal german, right on the mark, seats are a bit old and in 2-2 format but the rest makes up for it, and as for First Class terminal at FRA, worth every cent to fly First, well done Germany, well done Lufthansa, probably my favorite airline, cant wait until they resume service to Australia

Old style seating. Low privacy since seats are upper deck (narrower cabin) 2+2. Overhead lockers are too small for normal carry-on. Very small personal monitors. Cabin service is odd since customers are served according to their Lufthansa FF status not by rows. The whole product is dated. Not worth paying double the price of very good LH business class.

A severely outdated seat perhaps, but an overall great product. Crew, once they lose the somewhat stern initial touch, are very friendly and efficient. The open cabin design on the upper deck facilitates the constant filling of my glass and if my glass never dries out I am a very happy traveller. The food offering surpasses any other airline I have taken. High quality varied ingredients, and a decent quantity.
It's this combination of great food and drink that makes the old-fashioned seating much more palatable and one can sleep very easily. And I have to admit that LH First is the only time I have travelled on the upper deck since I was about 6 years old when the First Class lounges disappeared from the 747's... It doesn't feel quite like the nose of a 747, but it is fun!
The ground service, with true VIP priority, makes the product for me.
