FrequentGolfer flew Lufthansa Economy (short haul), on a CRJ900 (29/12/2011 15:02)

Return after the previous review....
Dusseldorf to Manchester. Deserted airport, check-in easy since someone helped us use the kiosk, and a choice of two desks with no queue to drop bags. Flight on time, row 11C again, food was a rather sticky piece of cake – difficult to eat with no plates – we’ve had to dry clean our clothes as a result. May consider claiming if a qualified solicitor wants to get in touch. Bussed to and from the plane. Arrived on time

Manchester to Dusseldorf operated by Eurowings. Terminal 1 is a spacious, airy place, but Lufthansa were pushed into (or were only prepared to pay for) a tiny corridor. Our check-in desks were 60-64 of which only two were manned, and one of those were for business class. The self check in kiosks didn't seem to work. Around 200 people / passengers were milling about for various Lufthansa destinations in zig zag aisles.
Eventually a LH employee started to pull out of the queue anyone who was on a later flight to try and alleviate the problem but still we queued for nearly an hour to check-in, despite the queue having been considerably shortened.
Boarding was across the tarmac and up onto the aircraft. We were in row 11. We have yet to find a way to choose our seat. Leg room was satisfactory, side space limited. All the overhead space had been taken up by commuter luggage. The flight was just over an hour. We had a cheese favoured roll, free alcohol. Staff were fine. Arrived on time at Dusseldorf and we went back down the steps and were bussed to the terminal.

LondonCity flew Lufthansa Economy (short haul), on a CRJ700 (09/09/2009 13:45)

Dusseldorf to Bucharest (August 2009)

Note: This flight was taken on a 48-seater Canadair CR2 which is a shortened version of the CR7 displayed here.

Knowing that the CR2 is a rear-engined plane and that this Monday morning flight was likely to be full I took the precaution of checking-in online the evening before. I managed to grab seat 6F which is away from the engines and towards the front. I was just ahead of the wings.

As this was an early flight at 0910, I had overnighted at the Sheraton hotel which is located atop the airport car park. After a restful night’s sleep I had only to walk the 200 or so yards between the hotel’s lobby and the airport terminal.

I had chosen to depart Dusseldorf, rather than Amsterdam or Frankfurt, because I wanted to avoid the sort of “big airport” delays that can happen during the summer months. In that respect Dusseldorf did not disappoint. The airport was a pleasure to use and Lufthansa (the main user of this airport) still old-fashioned enough to provide racks of free newspapers (both German and international titles) within its terminal area.

But there was a potential problem. Even though it was August, the airport was shrouded in mist that morning. Fortunately departures were unaffected (only incoming services were delayed) and, for my CR2, this was its first flight of the day.

Bus boarding commenced at 0840. After a short delay passengers were seated just before 0900. The CR2 has limited space within its cabin (it’s basically an elongated executive jet) so those in the know deposited their hand luggage (for loading into the hold) with airline staff just before boarding.

The flight (operated by Lufthansa’s regional partner Eurwings) taxied away on time but were held at the end of the runway for a five or 10 mins because of the weather conditions before being allowed to take off.

The CR2 is an exhilarating aircraft in which to fly with engine noise (at least in row 6) subdued. The flight was almost full in economy but there seemed only a couple of occupants in the first few rows of business class.

Nothing happened service-wise until almost an hour into the flight. Then staff emerged from the galley to hand passengers a light meal on a tray: slices of ham or cheese plus a small dessert. There were two rounds of drinks.

We routed overhead Southern Germany, Austria and Hungary before beginning the descent to the Romanian capital.

Touchdown was more or less on time at 1245 (Bucharest is one hour ahead of Dusseldorf time). The CR2 parked on the apron in front of the terminal.

A bus took us to the arrivals area. After a few mins wait at immigration I was in the baggage hall with my case waiting on the belt.

LondonCity flew Lufthansa Economy (short haul), on a ATR42-500 (08/09/2009 14:51)

London City to Dusseldorf (August 2009)

London City (LCY) was eerily quiet for this 1800 Sunday evening flight operated by an ATR42-500 turbo-prop.

Although the flight is billed as a Lufthansa service (and bore the carrier's regional livery) it is actually operated by under licence by German airline Contactair.

I had checked in online earlier in the day and allocated myself window seat 5F which was towards the front of the economy class zone. There were no check-in delays.

Boarding commenced soon after 1730 with newspapers (both English and German titles) being offered at the door.

We taxied away on time. The twin-engined ATR42 is a noisy plane on take off and climb but the racket abated once we reached cruising height. Seating is four across (2-2) and space seemed adequate given that the ATR42 is a commuter plane.

The two cabin crew served passengers with the sole occupant in business class getting his meal and drinks first. Service was reserved yet efficient.

Catering consisted of freshly made ham or cheese rolls with a chocolate bar and drinks.

It was perfect flying weather and after a trip of little more than an hour we landed in Dusseldorf some 20 mins early at around 2015.

Passengers had a bus transfer to the terminal and my bag appeared soon after on the carousel.

frustratedflyer flew Lufthansa Economy (short haul), on a A321-100 / 200 (04/12/2008 16:17)

Sat in 21C from MUC-LHR which was as good a seat as most on the plane except the exit rows. On my flight the business curtain was further back than the plan shown. There was a drinks service with a roll and a chocolate bar - very business like service. Leather newish seats were quite comfortable as a fell asleep! Boarding was good with self service gates where you scanned your bardcode.
