SimonRowberry flew Brussels Airlines Economy (short haul), on a Avro RJ85 (31/08/2011 22:13)

Brussels Airlines, BRU - BHX Economy, 31.08.11

Got to the airport and as Star Alliance Gold, I checked in at the HON Circle/Senator desk. The lady was fairly brusque and I had to remind her to give me the barcode sticker that let me through the Fast Track security at BRU.

In the event, the security area was fairly quiet, but I used the Fast Track anyway.

I then went to the Brussels Airlines Lounge on B pier. It was crowded, but the staff were (as ever) friendly, welcoming and helpful. Not the greatest selection of F&B offerings, but the staff really are excellent.

Boarding was at Gate B93 (although my boarding pass said B92), which is in the bus transit area. There was some confusion at the gate, as between us, the passengers had variously B92, B93 and B94 on the passes. The wait on the bus for stragglers was a little long.

I was in 9F, the first row in B.Light (economy). The B.flex seating in front of me was almost totally full, yet I had the middle seat kept free. We left 10 minutes late.

Food service was slow. 30 minutes into a 1 hour (ostensibly) flight, we were asked whether we wished to purchase any food or drink. I bought a tolerable cheese sandwich and bottle of sparkling water for €6.00.

We arrived 15 minutes late at BHX. Disembarkation was via an air bridge and passport control was quiet. My priority-tagged bags came off last, after a 20 minute or so wait.

Conclusion - a basic flight, late and nothing really to write home about. I use SN regularly, and this was one of the less satisfactory ones I have taken over the years.

This flight was with a B737-300. Brussels Airlines has finally re-introduced its business seating for just over a year.

The boarding is always an issue with Brussels Airlines, even though it's part of Star Alliance and Miles & More. It still needs to understand what the frequent flyer program really is.

I got an invite for a special event recently as one of its top 100 frequent flyers, but when it comes to boarding, Brussels Airlines is terrible. Of course they ask for childeren and people needing assistance first. However after that, it is a free-for-all.

Business and Star alliance Gold are not asked to pre-board, really sad. There is very little control when going on board as well. I always try to board first to ensure I have a place overhead for my carry-on. However, the poor others traveling in business coming on late find no place for their carry-ons (2 permitted) because economy customers placed their heavy carry-ons in the front of the plane to avoid taking it to the back of the plane.

Brussels Airlines really needs to improve on this.

Business seating is fine, comfortable seats. Sleeping is fine for a nap on a short-haul flight. Their on-board service is good. In-flight entertainment of course is serious lacking; bring a book or iPod. Food and drinks are adequate. good selection, along with baggage handling.

Please improve on punctuality, flights are always departing with 15 minutes delay. Not bad these days though.

old Airbus, Airbus very old, uncomfortable seats, bad sound system, video system obsolete, poor quality meals, it was a very painful night flight ... Airbus was the OO-SFW, seats 14H and 14K, no audio, impossible to plug an headset, the system was out of service ... the seat 14H is located just behind the "kitchen" of the business class, noisy place due to regular carts banging against the wall ...

the plane was not full and a lot of passengers were able to sleep on the central seats, but the A330 (OO-SFN) is old and the seats are not the best, not comfortable, from my place, 22H, it was not possible to see something on the small screens, too far ... the food was definitive not the best, green salad and lentils, something like beef, green beans and mashed potatoes but just warm, a little piece of cheese (camembert), a chocolate and a waffle. The red wine was ok! The crew also! A little ice-cream was served later. The flight was on time on arrival after a 40 minutes delayed take off. It's really time for Brussels Airlines to have new aircraft. For my next trip to Africa, I will fly Ethiopian, longer trip, more hours but more comfortable aircraft !!!!

danfly13 flew Brussels Airlines Economy (short haul), on a Avro RJ85 (15/02/2010 20:14)

I flew Brussels Airlines just this week and I really enjoyed it! I was meant to fly from Gothenburg to Tel Aviv with Austrian Airlines and connect in Vienna, but I missed my flight. We got new tickets for a flight leaving later that day with Brussels Airlines witch would connect us in Brussels and then go on to Tel Aviv. I was very happy, because with the tickets we got we would give us a couple of hours to see Brussels. What I didn't know was that they had given us B.Light Economy seats which gave us mainly a much bigger meal than in the economy class. The food was really good and the service was great! I got a seat on row 3 so the engine was not in the way which by the way is a real big pain if you're not in b.light ..... or business class . With that I really truly recommend this flight and airline!

athomeagain flew Brussels Airlines Economy (short haul), on a A319 (14/02/2010 07:12)

Although it's strange to see the four hour flight from Brussels to TLV listed as "short-haul" BA uses an A319 for the trip. Although the plane was packed I was stuck in the middle, the economy seat was surprisingly tolerable: plush leather-like, large headrest, a bit more legroom and pitch than average. Service was fast and the meal approached tolerable. Although there was no in-flight entertainment to route map on the monitors was a nice touch I had never flown Brussels before, but no consider it a reasonable airline to fly.

Deep leather-feel seats reasonably wide on the AVRO 85. Usually among my least favorite aircraft, the AVRO seat on the BA GOT to Brussels flight had sufficient legroom, width and comfort to be much better than average for an economy seats.
