Air Asia (airline code AK) is a Malaysian short-haul, no-frills airline flying based in Kuala Lumpur. It flies a fleet of 72 Airbus A320 aircraft configured in one class (economy) with 180 seats.
Ownership
The airline is owned by a group of private investors, including Sir Richard Branson. Aero Ventures Sdn is the major shareholder, with 48%. Virgin Group has 16%, Air Asia staff 16%, Orix 10% and Manara Consortium 10%. Malaysia Airlines has a 10% stake following a share swop deal that saw the two airlines invest in each other in summer 2011.
Route Network
Air Asia has an extensive network of services from its main hub at Kuala Lumpur and from its secondary bases at Bangkok and Jakarta. It serves 61 destinations with 108 routes throughout South East Asia and southern China.
Note that Air Asia subsidiaries have different airline codes. Flights operated by Thai Air Asia from Bangkok have the code FD and those by Indonesia Air Asia bear the code QZ.
Other Information
The carrier operates from its own low-cost terminal at Kuala Lumpur, but note that this is some distance from the main airport, so allow plenty of time to transit if flying into the main terminal on other airlines. As with all no-frills airlines, food and drink must be paid for on board.
